Digoxin Toxicity. Digoxin is used to treat congestive heart failure and to slow the heart rate in patients with atrial fibrillation. Digoxin toxicity can present acutely, by an intentional or accidental overdose (i.e., therapeutic misadventure), or chronically, such as when patients on digoxin develop an acute kidney injury.
Digoxin should not be confused with digitoxin. The initiation of digoxin therapy has been divided into rapid and slow digitalization followed by the maintenance digoxin dose, and the proposed regimens vary considerably. However, digoxin levels should always be interpreted taking into account what effects the drug is having and any symptoms of toxicity.
